What's This? A New Post!

I realize the blog doesn't reflect it, but lots of things have been happening at Old Standard. I had a second, so I thought I would post a quick picture from one of our last log trips. Thought it turned out nicely.

New website videos coming soon!

Here's a picture I snapped of a high grade sycamore log waiting to be processed at Old Standard. Pretty impressive tree...

The Dude Abides...

Watching over the Old Standard crew at every step of the way, the Dude abides. (Picture from the wall of our shop).

OS Site updates!

Wow...it's been a while since my last blog visit. We've been busy finishing up our summer batch of spruce and maple logs, so my computer time has been limited. Anyway, I did want to update the blog and let everyone know that we've done some recent updates to the Old Standard website, www.adirondackspruce.com. Be sure and check out our "Bargains and Specialty Items" page; we've pictured and listed a ton of new items including guitar top specials, unique Honduran Rosewood sets, and some great Birdseye Maple sets. We've also listed our newest Collings Guitar on our "Instruments For Sale" page, so be sure and check that out as well. It's got an absolutely pristine Adirondack top on it, and the great tone to back it up. Finally, due to many recent requests for flat mandolin wood, we've photographed some really nice complete flat mando sets on our "Mandolin Wood" page. Enjoy the site; more news soon!

Old Standard featured in Bluegrass Unlimited!

Please head out to your local newsstands and check out the article on Old Standard Wood featured in the latest issue of Bluegrass Unlimited. (www.bluegrassmusic.com) Freelance writer, photographer, and musician Bill Graham headed out to our neck of the woods a couple months ago, and after an extensive tour and interview wrote up the story. Thanks to Bill and the folks at Bluegrass Unlimited; we're very excited about the issue!

New OS Crew Pics!

About a month ago John brought in a really exceptional load of Adirondack logs, so we got everyone together for a new group picture. Here's some of the highlights from the photo session.

Fiddle me this, Fiddle me that...

Not surprisingly, various instruments find their way through the doors here at Old Standard from time to time. I happened to have my camera with me the other day while walking through the shop, so I snapped some quick pictures of an old fiddle that was lying around. Being such a visually interesting instrument, I thought the images turned out pretty nice.

December at Old Standard

Working up a maple log yesterday, about 45 degrees outside, but woke up this morning and the Mercury had taken a dive to 14 degrees. Needless to say, it was time to move inside. Anyway, I threw a couple logs on the fire, put a Steve Earle disc on repeat, and started working on a batch of Adirondack tops headed to our friends in Nazareth, PA....otherwise known as CF Martin.

John left over the weekend on a log hunt, chasing the ghost of Adirondack past, and Jim's got packages going out this week to France, Australia, Minnesota, California, and Ohio.

Stay tuned....more news soon.

Adirondack Arrival.

Well after many hours on the highway, countless cups of coffee, and several John Prine discs, John rolled into town in the wee hours of the morning with a fresh load of Adirondack. I had a chance to snap a couple pictures as we unloaded the truck and sorted through the logs, and thought everyone might like to take a look.

Robert @ Old Standard

"Up in the morning
Work like a dog
Is better than sitting
Like a bump on a log

Mind all your manners
Be quiet as a mouse
Some day you'll own a home
That's as big as a house

There's a big old goofy man
Dancing with a big old goofy girl
Ooh baby
It's a big old goofy world"

Old Standard Update

I know it's been awhile, but thought I would check back in with the blog and give a quick update on things here at Old Standard. We just got a fresh batch of logs in (both Maple and Spruce), so we've been working through the logs as weather allows. (Raining here about every day...feels like the Northwest!) Speaking of Maple, check out the picture above of a particularly fine Red Maple log we worked up a few months ago. Super-nice figure...like you hardly ever see. We knew it was something special as soon as we took a bit of the bark off and got a good look at it. Also, we've gotten a good response from the new website. Seems everyone is enjoying the added pictures and extra info. Anyway, that's the news for now. Thanks for visiting...

Customer Feedback

We recently shipped out an Adirondack top and bracewood to a customer in Spain, and he responded so enthusiastically that we thought we would post his response on the blog. As we mention on the website, we take quality and attention to detail very seriously at Old Standard, so we're always happy to get feedback like this. Thanks to luthier John Evans for the kind words!

"Great wood! I jointed the tops today. They are fantastic and the brace wood is really hard and is split properly down the grain. I appreciate what you guys are doing! You are keeping the real origins of good AMERICAN guitar making alive! Rave on! This Adirondack knocks spots off the European Spruce and that comes from an English (i.e. European) guy!"

New Pics

Here is one of the standouts from our latest batch of Collings Guitars. How much of a standout is it, you might ask? Well being a 12-fret kind of guy, John's decided it's a "keeper". Not to worry though, we've got a wide selection of guitars available that stack up to it quite nicely, including a recently added custom-built Merrill. Check out our "Instruments For Sale" page at http://www.adirondackspruce.com/ for more info.

New OS Website Is Up!

After weeks of of work, the new Old Standard website is up and available for viewing at www.adirondackspruce.com. We're still working through a few kinks, but please check it out and let us know what you think. We've added tons of new pictures and info, so it's already light years ahead of our previous "dinosaur" website. More to come soon...
